Learning Goals

In learning a useful first step is the definition of your learning goals. Definition of learning goals helps you to:

1. Clarify what you want to accomplish.
2. Define the words and terms you will use to search for resources.
3. Select resources that are most appropriate.
4. Select only those resources necessary to achieve your goals.
5. Evaluate the achievement of your learning’s purpose.

Creating Your Learning Goals

Knowing where you want to end up is the first critical step in not ending up someplace else. Explicit goals will help you ensure that you learn what you intend.
Your learning’s purpose (e.g.Learn about Dixieland Jazz) is your compass providing you with a direction for lifelong learning. Your specific goals (e.g. Describe origins of music, List 4 influential musicians, etc.) are your road map guiding you towards the achievement of your learning’s purpose.

Use the example in the following table to guide the development of your own goals for your learning’s purpose.

Example goal: I will be able to describe the origins of Dixieland Jazz, list 4 influential musicians and identify 3 current popular bands.
An advantage of using verbs in your goal statements is that they can enable you to measure the success of your learning: For example, having completed the learning purpose above, can you;
1.Describe the origins of Dixieland Jazz?
2.List 4 influential musicians?
3. Identify 3 popular bands?
If the answer is 'yes' to these questions then give yourself a huge 'pat on the back'. You have demonstrated a fantastic achievement in your lifelong learning and can now share your knowledge and resources with others and move on to another learning purpose.

SMART Learning Goals

Setting goals is more than making vague statements like, "I will become a better cook" or "I will learn more about lawn bowls." It means creating a written plan that includes reasonable and measurable objectives. It means setting SMART goals. The SMART acronym to explain goal setting. S.M.A.R.T. refers to goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Framed.

Your Learning eMail Account

When you have established your learning goals you should create an email account dedicated to your learning communications.

An email account dedicated to your learning will provide a base for your learning communications and enable you to focus on communications associated with your learning activities. For example; as you create free accounts with a range of social media services you will be sent an email from the service provider that you will be required to 'click' to activate your social media service.
